Takeaway Delights
Although the Mystery Gourmet and his compliant Spouse have, as of now for the most part, shared the culinary delights of the local restaurants as sit-down experiences, they are anxious not to give the impression they do not equally savor the enjoyment of so-called "take-away" or "fast foods." As a matter of fact, this is far from the truth in that both of them have become a tad lazy as to home preparation of food in view of the wide availability of excellent dishes at very reasonable prices available on the island both for luncheon and evening meals. Among those offerings appreciated over the past months have been: pizza from Pasa Bon Pizza; pizza and calzone from the Pizza Temple; gazpacho from Rum Runner's at Captain Don's Habitat; great lasagna from Cozzoli's;both chicken with coleslaw and chicken "wraps" from Kentucky Fried Chicken; Lebanese, Spanish style and Argentine food from the Garden Café;one of the innumerable selections of Subway sandwiches; and a wide variety of Italian, Venezuelan, local and North American style foods from Captain Wook's. On occasion, in view of the fact Wook's offers two "luncheon specials," the thrifty pair has been known to purchase both, enjoying one entree at lunch and the second for the evening meal. Bonaire's balmy climate along with multiple sea side sites suitable for picnics offers the opportunity for a pleasant midday outing, enjoying a pre-prepared meal, perhaps enriched by a nice bottle of wine supplied by the Antillean Wine Company. The ultimate in fun for the Gourmet, Spouse and their highly nautical little boy Alfonzo, weather and waves permitting, is to embark on their small boat, find a mooring unoccupied by a dive boat, frequently one at No Name beach on Klein or even at Pink Beach, swim and snorkel, enjoy the take-away and sun for a time while finishing a bottle of cool Pinot Grigio. Bonaire is rated as the premier shore diving island in the Caribbean by more than one scuba diving publication.. It occurs to the Gourmet that, as an adjunct to a pleasant day of shore diving, a supply of such fine nourishment as is mentioned above would provide a welcome break during the required intervals between dives (Pinot Grigio excepted). The point to be made: one does not have to be "rich and famous" or dine expensively to enjoy highly satisfying gastronomic and recreational pleasures here on Bonaire. MG&S.
